Canil Portimao

Canil Portimao / Friends of Canil de Portimao

The canil in Portimao is a municipal canil and so is operated by the Portimao Camara. The non- profit organisation “Friends of Canil de Portimao” works with this canil to improve the quality of life of the animals at the canil and to find homes for their dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. Together with the camara vet, Friends of Canil de Portimao helps raise funds to supplement the care for the animals of the canil (sterilizations and other vet care) as well as to publicize the animals of the canil in need of homes or foster families on their website. They have volunteers who walk and groom as many of the dogs as they are able and greatly need help in this area. Friends of Canil de Portimao have a supportive and well-informed focus on rehoming.

Previously a killing station, the Portimao municipal canil has made tremendous changes and improvements and now has a no-kill policy except in cases of aggression or illness. Although improving, as is often the case, the municipal canil is tremendously overcrowded and underfunded. Sadly, animals are still abandoned and this is one of the few places where such animals will not be turned away even though the facility is extremely small. Many projects and progress is being made to improve the situation at the Portimao canil but this always takes time and funding, and it is still a difficult place for any animal to be left.
