Canil Sao Francisco do Assis

This is one of the largest shelters in our area.  There are well over 400 dogs at this shelter and only capacity for 250 dogs.    There is little vet treatment given to the vast number of their dogs.  On any given week 40+ dogs and 20+ puppies can be brought into this shelter.  Kittens arrive by the box load.  Some of these poor animals are in atrocious condition and nothing can be done except to humanely euthanize.    With the facilities and the financing available there is no other option.  For these same reasons, disease remains rampant for both dogs and puppies, with often fatal results for the animals.  At CSFA dogs are not always sterilized and females become impregnated and give birth while at the shelter.  The problems at CSFA are immense, funds are limited, and more help is needed.

 In 2011, from January to July, we entered daily to this shelter and rehomed nearly 200 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens.  We also sponsored the neutering of any female noticed to be pregnant and attempted to put in place a long-term sterilization plan.  Unfortunately, in July 2011 we were forced to withdraw from the canil. 

This is the only shelter in the Loule area that we are aware of accepting on a regular basis new animals.  We strongly urge that you consider how many animals are already at this shelter, the limits upon their quality of life and the care that they receive before you consider placing any animal to this canil.   Although many animals are rehomed from this canil  (especially to new homes abroad), these are the  lucky few and on average far more animals enter this canil than ever leave.
