There has recently been a group of 5-8 dogs abandoned at the beach in Vale do Lobo. We were contacted as it is expected the camara will soon arrive and as they cannot stay there. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the camara will only manage to catch the friendlier of the dogs, which are the dogs that are also the most rehomable, but then they will end up in terrible conditions and... if they survive... be one of many many hundreds in a shelter. So we colleted these two from the beach. Sadly, both the dogs tested positive for dirofilaria (or advanced heartworm). Although unlike leish this can sometimes be cured, the treatment is very expensive, very intensive (the dogs must remain in a very quiet area for up to 6 weeks) and also very very difficult on a dog. Unable to do this, and knowing that a dog with heartworm that is not treated will suffer a horrible death, both these boys were put to sleep at the vet. A sad start for September.
