DPDSAA and SOSAA Join Forces to Tackle Street Animal Sterilisation in Algarve
Two leading non-profit animal welfare organisations in Portugal – Dispencario Portugese De Saude As Animals (DPDSAA) and Sterilise Our Strays of Algarve (SOSAA) – have announced a collaboration to implement a large-scale sterilisation program for street cats and dogs in the Algarve region.
DPDSAA and SOSAA recognise that uncontrolled breeding is one of the biggest issues facing street animal populations in the Algarve. Many cats and dogs end up homeless or surrendered to shelters due to owners being unable to care for litters of puppies and kittens. Sterilisation is the most effective way to reduce unwanted litters and curb the growth of street animal numbers.
Under the new program, DPDSAA and SOSAA volunteers will work together to trap cats and dogs from the streets or from low-income families in the Algarve who cannot afford sterilisation. The animals will be sterilised at local veterinary clinics with funds provided by the charities. After recovery, street cats will be returned to their locations while dogs will be assessed for rehoming if suitable.
Education about responsible pet ownership will also be stepped up to prevent future litters. The charities hope this collaborative effort can make significant strides towards solving the street animal overpopulation problem and reducing animal suffering in the Algarve through sustainable population control measures.
Both DPDSAA and SOSAA rely entirely on donations to finance their vital work. Contributions to either charity will help support this important new sterilisation program and help give street cats and dogs in the Algarve a brighter future.
