Unfortunately we have to announce the stop of activities of Sterilise Our Strays for now, due to ill health of Ginie, who is no longer capable of continuation of all her work.

Sterilise Our Strays was basically a one womans'band on a day to day basis. For many years Ginie worked and worked!

Over the last 14 years over 20.000 animals were sterilised and taken out of the reproduction cycle, over 1,5 million euro spent on animal welfare bills, well over 2500 animals rehomed...

It is time for Ginie to look after herself, and we all pray they will be able to operate on her and remove all the evil in her body. The tumors are currently classified as benign, but oncologist has expressed his concern and Ginie is awaiting a really big operation.

Please do not send anymore emails, they will not be replied to. All activities have stopped for the unforeseen future.

We wish Ginie lots of strength to over come this hurdle and wish her a positive and healthy outcome.

Sterilise Our Strays

Once upon a time, not so long ago, a dog showed up at someone’s gate.

It’s a Great Dane in deplorable condition, a microchip is read, deemed unregistered, and the dog is left to her own devices. Another person hears of the situation and goes to help and rescue the dog.

It is raced to the vet clinic where it is tested for tick fevers, leishmaniose, and heart worm, she is admitted, observed, taken care of, dewormed, defleed, properly fed and her ear infection is treated. She is truly emaciated and extremely anaemic and weak.

SOS helps behind the scenes with the vetting and legal side of this dog, as she is microchipped but not registered. Due to ill health, unfortunately Ginie simply cannot do any more and is less hands on than she has ever been. But her knowledge and network is invaluable.

All stops are pulled, and SIAC is very cooperative with the vet clinic and SOS; so now the Great Dane is registered in the name of the association which is legally allowed during the 15 days waiting period.

The microchip is traced back to a vet in a locally well-known establishment, this vet never registered the microchip. After speaking to a couple of people a vet who no longer works at this establishment, came forward as she knows the dog and the client, the owner.

A couple of hours later Ginie and the owner are communicating on the phone and the owner is so happy and emotional, so happy that she is alive. He/she thought she was dead…
On 10 December 2022 she disappeared from his/her property, (presumed stolen) whilst his other 2 dogs remained. The owner was sick in bed and only found out in the morning. He/she went down to the GNR in Loule to report his/her dog missing, but they shrugged and that was it. If only they had checked the microchip in the SIAC database, they would have figured out the microchip wasn’t registered. There was no advice to the owner as what to do and where to post, and register his/her missing beloved dog! The owner is not on any form of social media so there is not really any other way of finding out what to do when you have recently moved here.

Looking at all the aggression, bullying and hatred on social media these days, it is no wonder more and more people are taking a huge step down from all what has to do with social media. The attacks some of the people involved in helping this dog had to endure, were totally unnecessary and uncalled for. SOS has proper protocols in place for situations like these.

The dog will remain registered in the SOS name for now, she will be going back to her owner for her wellbeing, tlc, vetting, etc. It has been agreed that she will be sterilised, and eventually be rehomed to the best home possible, but there is no rush. Her health and wellbeing are more important. The owners’ life has changed quite dramatically and he/she is more than happy to love and care for her for a while, but keeping her is no longer an option due to unexpected massive changes in his/her life.

She will be that beautiful one again ❤

Can't wait to see her back to full health 😍 and so glad you got to the bottom of the unregistered chip, so much investigating work in the background with this beautiful girl. Sadly not surprised by GNR, annoying though for sure.

Poor dog - a lot has happened to her health wise during the past six months. I hope she finds the loving final home that she deserves - GD’s are lovely gentle giants that belong in a family environment 💖

Great work😻

Unregistered chip in the loule area? Not the municipal canil again by chance?🙄

Happy ending 💛

🖤🖤🖤

What a beautiful dog. How sad that is but sure she is on the road to being happy and healthy again thanks to you all.
