Once upon a time, not so long ago, a dog showed up at someone’s gate.
It’s a Great Dane in deplorable condition, a microchip is read, deemed unregistered, and the dog is left to her own devices. Another person hears of the situation and goes to help and rescue the dog.
It is raced to the vet clinic where it is tested for tick fevers, leishmaniose, and heart worm, she is admitted, observed, taken care of, dewormed, defleed, properly fed and her ear infection is treated. She is truly emaciated and extremely anaemic and weak.
SOS helps behind the scenes with the vetting and legal side of this dog, as she is microchipped but not registered. Due to ill health, unfortunately Ginie simply cannot do any more and is less hands on than she has ever been. But her knowledge and network is invaluable.
All stops are pulled, and SIAC is very cooperative with the vet clinic and SOS; so now the Great Dane is registered in the name of the association which is legally allowed during the 15 days waiting period.
The microchip is traced back to a vet in a locally well-known establishment, this vet never registered the microchip. After speaking to a couple of people a vet who no longer works at this establishment, came forward as she knows the dog and the client, the owner.
A couple of hours later Ginie and the owner are communicating on the phone and the owner is so happy and emotional, so happy that she is alive. He/she thought she was dead…
On 10 December 2022 she disappeared from his/her property, (presumed stolen) whilst his other 2 dogs remained. The owner was sick in bed and only found out in the morning. He/she went down to the GNR in Loule to report his/her dog missing, but they shrugged and that was it. If only they had checked the microchip in the SIAC database, they would have figured out the microchip wasn’t registered. There was no advice to the owner as what to do and where to post, and register his/her missing beloved dog! The owner is not on any form of social media so there is not really any other way of finding out what to do when you have recently moved here.
Looking at all the aggression, bullying and hatred on social media these days, it is no wonder more and more people are taking a huge step down from all what has to do with social media. The attacks some of the people involved in helping this dog had to endure, were totally unnecessary and uncalled for. SOS has proper protocols in place for situations like these.
The dog will remain registered in the SOS name for now, she will be going back to her owner for her wellbeing, tlc, vetting, etc. It has been agreed that she will be sterilised, and eventually be rehomed to the best home possible, but there is no rush. Her health and wellbeing are more important. The owners’ life has changed quite dramatically and he/she is more than happy to love and care for her for a while, but keeping her is no longer an option due to unexpected massive changes in his/her life.
