Apologies, i made a mistake.. due to failing eyesight, i did not see it was not dogs but male cats.. so now have adjusted the post...

Some shockingly low numbers of sterilisations in 2024 achieved by Algarvian concelhos!
If you are missing your concelho that’s because the numbers were not submitted to icnf!
2024
Monchique 50 female cats 28 female cats
Alcoutim 52 female cats 18 female cats
Albufeira 75 female cats 47 mae cats
Lagos. 122 female cats 126 male cats
Lagoa 142 female cats 114 male cats
Loule 154 female cats 118 male cats
Faro 358 female cats 202 male cats
Castro Marim 368 female cats 219 male cats
Tavira 374 female cats 297 male cats
Silves 310 female cats 582 male cats
Olhao 412 female cats 256 male cats

Totals 2417 female cats + male 2007 cats total 4424 cats

2417 female cats is a fair amount but still not enough by a long shot and yes at least these are no longer part of the reproductive cycle….
These seem to be owned cats more than colony /street cats! And if the CED is not expanded we will forever be in this never ending circle of thousands of kittens born to colony kittens left to procreate freely…. Every year we are guaranteed a steady supply of kittens needing help!

Over 1000 (almost 1100) kittens we prevented of being born by sterilising the 249 pregnant cats …. Where would these kittens have gone ?

Do people realise the cost of sterilising these 1100 kittens ? Just multiply by average rescue price of 55 euro….that is € 60.500,— ! Price of a 2024 Volvo xc60 t6awd or a 2025 Mitsubishi outlander…just as a visualisation of the situation !

There is no official count or guesstimate on how many feral/colony/garden cats there are in the Algarve alone! Hundreds of thousands for sure… they are everywhere, every dirt track, every garbage container has visiting and hopeful cats looking for a meal to survive….

What needs to happen?

Education, tv commercials posters, free sterilisation of colony /garden cats and cats and male cats belonging to low income families … everybody else will just have to take responsibilities as a pet owner and pay for the sterilisation cost… if you don’t pay, you shouldn’t have pets…
No dog / puppy or cat /kitten should be allowed to leave and legally be adopted from a shelter/rescue before it is sterilised /castrated!

Since we started with this project end of last year we have now done quite some male cats mainly coming from rescues and shelters which have been rehomed unsterilised ! It has to stop these irresponsible rehomings!

If we don’t all work together towards helping these animals it will
Never stop… the abandonment the endless supply of newly born male cats and cats…

We can never rehome ourselves out of the problems by warehousing all these animals in shelters…. Just look at the shelters.. overcrowded and always full…

Pois…. Grata!
